Consider the kind of pictures you are going to be taking. Certain features will be important if you are going to be taking family portraits rather than if you plan to take pictures of landscape and buildings while you travel. Some digital cameras differ in the quality of pictures that they can take from long distances.

Your level of experience with picture taking is also important as you select a camera to purchase. For beginners with minimal experience in picture taking and the various functions of digital cameras, more automation is ideal. If you are an experienced camera user, you will want a camera that gives you more control over features such as flash, aperture, etc.

Think about the size of the pictures you will print. The larger size of the print pictures the more megapixels your camera will need to maintain quality of the picture.

How will you be storing the photographs? High quality pictures with a larger number of megapixels will take up more storage space. If you have limits on how you can store pictures, this will affect the type of camera you purchase. Even if you have the budget to purchase one of those 7 megapixel digital cameras, it is not a wise purchase if you cannot store the pictures.
