Digital cameras are as popular as cell phones; just about everyone seems to have one. For those who do not, or for others who want to upgrade or change to a different type, there are essentially three main types of digital cameras.

Point and shoot – These are the simplest to use, requiring little or no expertise. They are convenient to carry around and produce great prints up to 8 x 10 size, having a resolution of three or four million pixels. There are many styles and models available and the prices are well below $500, making them affordable for anyone.
Prosumer – This type of digital camera is on the next step above the uncomplicated point and shoot. These cameras have a much higher resolution, usually up to five million pixels or more, and a number of additional features such as expert focusing and imagery control.
Professional – If you’re a professional photographer, or even an experienced amateur, the more expensive digital camera may fit your needs. These range in price from about $1,500 to over $8,000 for some types, depending upon accessories and features. They have high resolutions of six to twelve million pixels, exposure controls, standard image sensors, and mountings for interchangeable lenses.
Of course, on the higher end of the scale, you can find digital video cameras, as well as digital cameras for your cell phone and PDAs. Digital cameras are much preferred over the traditional styles that require film and processing time, and photography has become simplified for even the most inexperienced user.
The future looks bright for all types of digital cameras, which may soon become a part of toys, watches, and who knows what else.
